Graycardinal's Guesses

(Mod note: [personal profile] graycardinal's guesses, without formatting, copy-pasted from the moderation queue.)

All the cookies are delivered, almost all the wrapping is done, and there are but a few scant moments left to guess at the authorship of various of the stories posted this round. As stated earlier, I have not prepared anything resembling a Spreadsheet of Doomâ„¢; this time round, it will all be sheerest speculation -- and perhaps even now, a touch of Jedi mind trickery. :-)

Some of these guesses are purely, well, guesses. Some, however, have actual deductions behind them.

ACD (& versions thereof)
The Charm of the Season - [personal profile] jeremy_holmes
Candid Review of a Fine Play - [personal profile] colebaltblue

ACD / Crossovers
A Case of Identities - [personal profile] scfrankles
Police of Penzance - [personal profile] gardnerhill

Yet another true (and not so misleading) fact: many years ago I sat across at least one convention filk circle from gardnerhill -- though neither she nor I were wearing our current handles at the time. (This would have been at Baycon in the '80s, within a year or so of the Great Fire Drill Adventure.) And it's specifically because of that musical background that I suspect her of being behind "Police of Penzance". (Assuming it wasn't me, that is.)

We associate scfrankles with stories involving a particular sort of wit and comic adventure, and it's for this reason that I'm going to tag him for this round's Doctor Who crossover, complete with dueling disguises, an improbably accurate scalpel, and the Master welded into a torpedo casing. (One has to admire Mycroft's respect for the Master's gift of escape artistry....)

Elementary
The Five Doctors - [personal profile] sanguinity
An L.A. Story - [personal profile] phoenixfalls

If gardnerhill didn't write "Five Doctors" (and I think it's unlikely she did, precisely because it does hit so many of the same notes as her story from the prior round), then sanguinity seems to me by far the likeliest candidate among our known players to have been the mind behind it.

Russell (& Friends)
The State of His Mind - [personal profile] angelqueen04
Insoluble Puzzles - [personal profile] starfishstar
sewing her skin together as I sow mine - [personal profile] language_escapes

I have an advantage here, as one of the reasons we have more Russell stories this round is, in fact, that I invited the folks at Letters of Mary over to our sandbox. Thus I know who out of the present pool would be likely to have had one of the LoM mods as their beta, and that's a fairly definitive clue. And if I'm persuaded -- as I think I am -- by the arguments elsewhere for language_escapes as author of the Enola/Russell crossover, then I must also be persuaded by the bit of true-but-misleading observation that there was only one offerer for Charlotte Holmes this time out. (As a practical matter, of course, there are other candidates -- notably sanguinity. But Araminta's story doesn't feel like a sangunity story to me, and besides, I've already penciled our erstwhile mod in above. (Also, sanguinity and I have written enough stories for one another these last few rounds that I'd think she's an unlikely match for me)

And now to bed; we shall see what the morning brings.
