Winter 2024 Guessing Post!

Thank you so much for another wonderful round of Holmestice! The mods want to say THANK YOU to all the creators who joined us this round. Being in this community with you is a joy and an honour.

Reveals and the Master List go up on December 21st. Until then, please enjoy and comment on all the lovely fanworks. (If you haven't thanked your creator for your own gift yet, please do!) Creators, please do NOT respond to Dreamwidth comments with your name attached or post your works elsewhere on the Internet until reveals go up in the community. You may of course reply to comments on AO3, which preserves your anonymity.

Meanwhile, stay tuned: treats are coming up! We have a bumper crop this round! For anyone thinking of making a treat, we will accept treats until reveals, so if there's a prompt that inspires you, please have at it! Just use the regular submission guidelines and send your headers to [email protected].

If you'd like to guess who created what in this round, here's a list of all the contributors for the main gifts. (You'll have to put in some extra work to guess the treat-makers!) Go ahead and take a guess! It's all in good fun.

Part 3

HOLMESTICE GUESSES, PART THE THIRD: BBC FIC

I apologize that this section of the guesses is going to be pretty boring on my part; almost everything amounts to pretty much, "I think the math works out this way?"

SH-221 for helloliriels (BBC) by catlock_holmes
The formatting seems to match (and there were only a couple other possibilities here, Rachelea and penaltywaltz, and I ended up putting them elsewhere).

Mrs. Turner's Problem for rachelindeed (BBC) by tepidspongebath
This one must have been a process of elimination, because it seems I haven't even left myself any notes about it! This must have simply been where I could best get tepidspongebath to fit.

A Small Request for Rachelea (BBC) by write_out
This is one of the only fics I was able to attach write_out to (as someone who offered only BBC) and the formatting more or less matches. And the only other possibilities here were tepidspongebath and iwantthatcoat, neither of whom seems all that likely.

Fluent in Silence for mercurialkitty (BBC) by justin_case
Not much to go on here, because this is someone I don't know at all! But the author's note says this is this person's first fic, so it did have to be someone I'm not yet familiar with. :-)

A Desire For Future Progeny for justin_case (BBC) by penaltywaltz
Tagging matches well; I questioned whether penaltywaltz would write Sherlock/John, since I know that's not their main thing, but it does seem they've done it a few times before.

The Devil Himself for Catlock_Holmes (BBC) by Rachelea
I made a kind of wild guess here that this might be Rachelea, based on the description of the fic matching some of the interests expressed in Rachelea's sign-up. But then this match continued to work even as other pieces got put into place around it, so I guess I'm sticking to it!

All I'm gonna say is that I am, as always, absolutely loving your guesses and how you come up with them. :D

I'm actually very happy you say that! I always worry that people will be, I don't know, offended? Or something like that? Because I'm making observations about everyone, and some of it is pretty weird and specific, like, "Aha! You use a space after a hyphen!" So I'm very, very glad if it's more amusing than annoying. :-)

When I was writing extensively in House fandom, I think I was the only person who used underlining to stress important words. It was so much my thing that when we did a "guess the writer" event, I deliberately switched to italics. :D

A perfect anecdote! That's exactly the kind of havoc that rampant guessing posts have wreaked on Holmestice. :D

Not remotely offended! And you were right about my fic, too. :) I'm trying to think what might have done it; I know in the past it was fairly consistent use of epigraphs, heh.

Oh ha, yes, I think I vaguely remember the epigraphs. :-)

In this case, I think it really was more about process of elimination; there weren't all that many people who might have written a BBC fic, and you were one of the few people who *definitely* wrote a BBC fic! And I've been out of the guessing game long enough that I don't remember specifics of most people's style, so I was flying blind. If anything, I think the one feature I grabbed onto might be the use of section breaks that were just a couple of blank spaces, rather than punctuation.
