All right, here we go again!

I will create:
A fanwork of the following type(s): fic
In one or more of the following parts of fandom:
Books: ACD/Canon; Mary Russell series (King); Solar Pons series (Derleth); The Infernal Device series (Kurland); The Seven-Percent Solution; Sherlock Holmes & the Red Demon series (Millett); A Study in Sable (Lackey); A Study in Charlotte (& see below)
TV/Film: Ritchie films; Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century; Without a Clue; Murder By Decree; ST:TNG (Moriarty episodes)
The foregoing is a springboard, particularly where published pastiches are concerned; I have read very widely in the world of post-Doyle Holmes (though perhaps not as widely as
gardnerhill, nor as deeply as
sanguinity in filmed media). Like that worthy, however, I deliberately sidestep BBC Sherlock, and I'm not versed enough in Elementary to go there, either. Feel free to try me on odd and unusual pastiches or interpretations not mentioned above -- with the note that anything I deleted from the default signup template, I deleted for Reasons. [Note especially the brand-new Mercedes Lackey book above, part of her "Elemental Masters" series. There's some interesting material there.]
For one or more of the following relationships:
Gen, friendship, & canon-consistent (e.g. Holmes/Russell, etc.); also Holmes/Lestrade (22CEN). For Study in Charlotte, I'm still making up my mind; OTOH, I am not your writer for Holmes/Watson slash.
I like working with one or more of the following categories:
AU (canon divergence); casefic; crossover; established relationship; fluff; friendship; humor; post-Reichenbach
I tend to write plot-driven and character-driven pieces; romance, not so much. As we've seen in past rounds, I am also very much on board for crossovers and lighter material, though I'm by no means limited to that mode.
With any of the following ratings: 1) suitable for general audiences; 2) non-explicit sexual content; 3) mild to moderate violence or depictions of non-sexual mature themes
For me, at least, explicit sexual material and Holmestice don't tend to occupy congruent or even adjacent brainspace, and although I've dabbled a bit in horror, it's never been the splattery kind. Having said that, and having put A Study in Charlotte on the table again, I am willing to wade into the drug use and sexual violence that form key parts of that book.
I am willing to create for the following squicks and/or kinks: None, please; see above.
I want to receive:
A fanwork of the following type(s): fic, podfic
In one or more of the following parts of fandom:
Books: ACD/Canon; Mary Russell series (King); Solar Pons series (Derleth); The Infernal Device series (Kurland); The Seven-Percent Solution; Sherlock Holmes & the Red Demon series (Millett); A Study in Sable (Lackey); A Study in Charlotte (& see below)
TV/Film: Ritchie films; Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century; Without a Clue; Murder By Decree; ST:TNG (Moriarty episodes)
For one or more of the following relationships:
In ACD and ACD-consistent canons, gen is safest, and pairings should be canon-consistent. OTOH, I'm happy to see Holmes/Russell in that series, very much open to Holmes/Lestrade in 22CEN, and Watson/MaryM. in most relevant canons. (Again, for A Study in Charlotte, I am still making up my mind.) And I very much believe in Holmes and Watson as friends of the first and deepest water, else I'd certainly not have taken up residence here....
In one or more of the following categories:

With any of the following ratings: 1) suitable for general audiences; 2) non-explicit sexual content; 3) mild to moderate violence or depictions of non-sexual mature themes
I wouldn’t mind any of the following squicks and/or kinks: None, please; see above. I promise, it's not that I object to smut on principle (definitely not!); I'm just not looking for it here.
Please include further details about what you’d like to receive:
Parts of the foregoing may make me sound like a strict ACD/canon hound, but this is not at all the case. I like some very odd Holmesiana, ranging from the very weird indeed (Druid's Blood by Esther Friesner) to Michael Kurland's Moriarty novels to -- rather to my surprise -- the Abdul-Jabbar Mycroft Holmes book (although I have some issues with that one). I am very much a crossover fiend, as demonstrated by some of my past work for this gallery, and I definitely have room for humor in my Holmes universe(s). And as I've noted, in those alt!-canons where it fits, I am absolutely not opposed to romance. Tell me a good story, open a window into unexamined moments or elements in a given source, shine a light on the Great Friendship, and all will be very well with me.
Special requests:

gardnerhill, variety is the spice of my writing life, and I enjoy flexing my keyboard in interesting directions. As my signups have always shown, it's easier for me to specify what I'm not suited for than to supply details on how far afield I'm willing to wander. I hope that will be enough of a guide this time around as well, and I look forward to playing the Great Game again.

Date: 2016-10-10 11:19 pm (UTC)[The Lackey book caught me by surprise. I was definitely not expecting that series to take a left turn into Holmesian territory, and there's actually a good deal more Watson than Holmes. Worth a look, I'd say.]

Date: 2016-10-11 12:19 am (UTC)It's been an aeon since I read Lackey, and I never read all that many. How well-versed does one need to be in the series to appreciate Sable, in your opinion?

Date: 2016-10-11 07:20 am (UTC)At least in theory, the Elemental Masters books each stand alone, as each is inspired to varying degrees by a particular fairy tale (or in this case, traditional ballad). OTOH, the leads in this particular book have appeared in two previous volumes, once as heroines and once as nominal rescuers-of-heroine, and there are other recurring background characters and organizations in play. On the third hand, Lackey gives just enough context and recap that you don't strictly need the earlier books for reference.
Having said all that, I should add some further observations.
One: This is not properly a Sherlock Holmes novel, nor even a Dr. & Mrs. Watson novel; rather, it's a Nan-and-Sarah novel in which Holmes and the Watsons (mostly the Watsons) are secondary characters. OTOH, the novel's central conceit -- that the Watsons are in fact elemental wizards, much to Holmes' consternation -- is at least moderately fascinating, and Lackey lays the groundwork for doing Interesting Things with one Professor James Moriarty, presumably in a future volume. [We have a title for that one, "A Scandal in Battersea", which is decidedly suggestive.]
Two: The Elemental Masters novels, as a series, are, well, odd. A number of them follow a very narrow fairy-tale formula, and fall apart completely if you try to look at them too closely in terms of plot and/or character arcs. Interestingly, this does not mean that they're not readable, so long as what you're looking for is a modernized fairy tale -- Lackey's writing has a level of sheer narrative energy and focus that is very good at hypnotizing the willing reader into going along with the conceit.
When Lackey tinkers with or alters the formula, the results are usually favorable. I quite liked "From a High Tower" (the quasi-Rapunzel book), which starts at the end of the traditional tale and goes off on its own adventure. And while "A Study In Sable" is definitely on the loosely plotted side, it worked well for me as a crossover yarn, and there's a *lot* of potential for fanfic built into this setup. I think it's very much worth reading on that basis, at least, notwithstanding the legitimate issues of craft many people cite with Lackey's work.
