[personal profile] holmesticemods posting in [community profile] holmestice
That's a wrap for the main round of gifts! Thank you so much for another wonderful round of Holmestice! The mods want to say THANK YOU to all the creators who joined us for this round. You put in a lot of hard work and made some wonderful things.

Reveals and the Master List go up on December 21st! Until then, please enjoy and comment on all the lovely fanworks. Creators, please do NOT respond to comments on DW or post your fanwork elsewhere until reveals go up in the community. (You may of course post to our AO3 Winter 2017 Holmestice collection, which preserves your anonymity. You may reply to AO3 comments, as well.)

The main round of gifts are all posted, but we're not done yet -- we have several days of treats coming up! We'll continue to accept treats right through until reveals, so if there's a prompt out there that intrigues you and you want to whip something up for it, please do! Just send it to [email protected], using the regular submission guidelines.

If you'd like to guess at who created what in this round, a list of all the creators is below the cut. Go ahead and take a guess! It's all in good fun.

Hurray! What a wonderful mix of works and 'verses.

No big guessing post from me this time, because I'm so far behind on reading that I'm pretty much just getting started. BUT I would like to register the one guess I have so far:

I think [personal profile] gardnerhill wrote "The Five Doctors"! Because it's Joan-centric, because gardnerhill is almost definitely the only person who matches all the fandoms included there, and because it bears some thematic similarities to gardnerhill's last Holmestice fic... including strong female characters, and a crossover of many 'verses.

That's all I've got; hopefully more later in the week.

[looks at week ahead]

It is very, very likely that I won't have enough spare hours to compile my usual Spreadsheet of Doom this year, what with a combination of holidays, a busy workweek, winding up Yuletide, *and* a spot of jury duty theoretically scheduled for Friday. In any event, a spreadsheet might not help much this year, what with all the newfolk and the amazing diversity of material in the round.

That said, I will certainly be back to guess in a day or so. And I think that I've probably achieved one of my primary goals this year, which was to write something that did not immediately and unequivocally appear to have my byline stamped all over it. I fully expect that at least two people other than the mods will peg my story correctly...but I also fully expect at least two people to credit me as having written something that I didn't actually write.

I wonder if [personal profile] sanguinity will share some of that popcorn....

I am horrible at guessing, especially with so many first-time holmestice writers! I may come back and add to this, but right now I'm fairly certain of one, and that is the author for "New Memories". It reminds me very much of the style of PipnFrodo, so that's my guess for that story!

So, I make it 45 gifts (not including treats) and 42 creators. And I think amindamazed is the only person on that list who didn’t sign up… So there are three internal pinch-hitters? (Or up to three - one person might have been very busy indeed.) Well, that doesn’t make things complicated at all ^^”

OK - a few guesses to get started.

The Five Doctors: Come on - this is definitely by [personal profile] gardnerhill. If it isn’t, it’s by someone going out of their way to pass themself off as her ^_^ Some evidence to back my guess up. The title is a Doctor Who reference, and gardnerhill used UNIT in her previous Holmestice offering. The use of ‘disturbing medical details’ as a kind of leverage also makes me think back to that previous fic and the use of menstruation discussions as a (very funny) form of torture. A female character takes centrestage in the fic, and the fic touches on sexism and racism. Multiple ‘verses are used with skill and confidence, and there’s clear affection for all the Watsons and Holmeses. Those lists of Dramatis Watsonae and Dramatis Holmesae make me think back to my own gift fic from gardnerhill, which was set in the Lego Hound ‘verse and which ends with a list of dramatis personae, including pictures. And finally, a minor bit of formatting - underlining is occasionally used for emphasis, which is something I associate with gardnerhill.

The Case of the Sleeping Servants: Must admit I guessed this was by [personal profile] smallhobbit from the header. But the first few paragraphs confirmed things for me - Small Hobbit has used the amusing headcanon of Watson disliking Wagner before. And it’s all just unmistakably her style.

The Cake Dilemma: I think this is by [livejournal.com profile] okapi1895. Okapi is possibly the most creative writer I’ve ever met. There is very little she won’t have a go at - when faced with a new challenge she essentially gives one firm nod and says quietly, “OK, then.” So I can really see her coming up with a fic that combines finger puppets and Greek tragedy. And there’s darkness but humour with it, and there’s the use of verse - Okapi writes a lot of poetry too. There’s the puns - I have been a bad influence on Okapi in that area. Also, there’s the HHH hotel, which suggests to me the hotel constructed by the serial killer HH Holmes, and I do have the advantage of knowing Okapi has read about this.

A Ride in the Park: I was reading this and enjoying the crossdressing and the erotic tension, and I managed to completely miss another important theme. I’d got to He will be mounted on a striking chestnut gelding with two white fore-legs, and I thought to myself, “Why are these colour terms so flaming confusing? Let’s see… ‘Chestnut’ is the colour of wet sand… A ‘bay’ is the colour of a chestnut…” Whereupon my brain yelled ‘HORSES!’ at me. This fic has clearly been written by someone who knows their stuff in this area. Which immediately made me think that it must be by [personal profile] tripleransom.

Nanti Polari: The More Holmes ‘verse and the quality of the writing made me wonder if this might be by one or other of the More Holmes writers I already knew. But the style did seem entirely unfamiliar to me. And I noticed a couple of idiosyncratic uses of formatting that I hadn’t come across before - instead of an em dash, the writer uses a double hyphen and then adds a space before typing the next word. Also, they favour ellipses but they seem to be inconsistent in how they choose to use them - sometimes they add a space afterwards, sometimes they don’t.

Armed with this knowledge, I looked back at the sign-ups, found who had offered to write in the Rathbone films ‘verse and then went to AO3 to look at their fics. (I genuinely don’t get out much.) And on my third attempt I think I hit gold. I found a writer who was an excellent possible match for the style, and for the formatting. I am pretty confident the writer is [personal profile] iwantthatcoat.

As Romeo to Juliet (podfic): Well, this sounds like sanguinity’s voice so I assume it’s by [personal profile] sanguinity ^__^ But this may not be the full story of course. sanguinity is a very likely person to have been a pinch-hitter as well as one of the original batch of creators, so I’m wondering if she’s written a fic too... I shall have to have another think.

I’m completely stuck at the moment on who’s written my own gift fic but I’ve got a few clues that I’m going to use to investigate further, and I will make a guess before the reveal. And I have to say that [personal profile] graycardinal’s statement is rather intriguing. I may have to rethink my guess there before I commit myself.

Yes.

It only occured me AFTER making the rec lists that some writer might ONLY reblog and/or like the rec list they contributed too (or at best, the one they recieved). MY idea was more the following: when/if all contributors of Holmestice like and reblog ALL lists, ALL work will get more traffic. Or, at least, when BBC is reblogged (because it has ca 100 notes already), people will might look up the other entries on Ao3 or here.

But yeah... the notes on tumblr are VERY revealing. One could easily - especially when starting with ACD adaptations - at least name the contributors. Plus the discription on their tumblr (Mary Russell etc.) --- observe and deduce.

Yeah... if it had been the gift that keeps on giving (aka everyone reblogging/liking ALL FOUR LISTS), we all would never know ;)

But how does BBC SHERLOCK say: "It is what it is".

Back to guess the author of my gift fic!

Police of Penzance: I was puzzled by who had written this one but there were some clues for me to go on. There is a little American English in it. The author is knowledgeable about ACD canon and is comfortable writing an ACD Holmes. But there are also at least three nods to the Sherlock ‘verse, which suggests to me that the author sees Sherlock as their main Sherlock Holmes fandom. And of course, they really, really know their way around a joke ^__^

So this led me to make the assumption that their sign-up would offer ‘ACD’, ‘Sherlock’ and ‘humor’ - and possibly ‘crossover’. This didn’t narrow creators down a great deal but it did narrow them down a bit. I looked at some people’s other fics but I wasn’t really making a match. In the end I did have someone pencilled in as my guess because we seemed a pretty good match in general, but it turned out they’d dropped out of the exchange. I had also previously made the assumption my gift fic was unlikely to be a pinch-hit. Doing a crossover would be adding an unnecessary layer of difficulty when time was tight, the fic was fairly long (though as the creator points out, parts were taken complete from Pirates), and the unrevealed fic appeared in my AO3 gift list pretty soon after the deadline.

However, I have now had reason to revise this assumption ^_^ nottoolateforthegame let me know that iwantthatcoat had let it slip they’d written two fics - which put them back onto my list of possible authors. I went back and looked at the formatting for ‘Police of Penzance’. And it has to be said it is far more idiosyncratic than the formatting for ‘Nanti Polari’ - there are em dashes as well as double hyphens, and there is a lot of variation in how ellipses are used. But there are a fair number of ellipses and the pattern ‘word, double hyphen, space, word’ does occur eight times.

So taking this information and going by the quality of the jokes and the quality of the fic in general, I’m going to say ‘Police of Penzance’ is a pinch-hit by [personal profile] iwantthatcoat.

Very scientific! I'm curious as to who you believe [personal profile] iwantthatcoat was pinch-hitting for. Also, why did you decide that your gift was the pinch-hit, not the other? Because you had a candidate for who the initial match had been?

More guesses!

sewing her skin together as i sew mine: I think this is by [personal profile] language_escapes. Not many people were going to be writing in either of those ‘verses, let alone going to put them together. I also looked up the title and found it was a quotation from a poem. I think language_escapes has done that at least once before - had a title in lower case that was taken from a poem.

The Fixed Foot: I think this is by my colleague in guessing, [personal profile] starfishstar. Only three people mentioned MDBD this time, one of whom was the recipient. And I don’t think the style is sanguinity’s. Also the author notes seemed to suggest someone who had newly seen the film, and the use of exclamation marks and double question marks in the notes did rather match starfishstar’s use of them in their sign-up.

The State of His Mind: OK, I’m going to be bold. I’m going to say this is by [personal profile] graycardinal. When I read this fic I immediately thought of him - right sort of ‘verse, right sort of style and I thought I could hear his voice in the author notes. But then he stated on the guessing post: And I think that I've probably achieved one of my primary goals this year, which was to write something that did not immediately and unequivocally appear to have my byline stamped all over it. Which naturally immediately made me doubt my choice. But perhaps he means that this fic has a pairing when he doesn’t usually include one…? In any case, I’m going to stick with this guess now.

A Woman Is Herself: Apart from the recipient, nobody mentions this ‘verse in their sign-up, but I think the beta for the fic may have given the game away. A little bit of sideways Googling and I found that [personal profile] elareine often credits prettylittlepliers as their beta.

Insoluble Puzzles: So I assume this has to be by [personal profile] angelqueen04, even though they don’t offer Charlotte Holmes in their sign-up. They do offer Mary Russell though - and I believe they know the recipient from another site, which may have encouraged the mods to match them.

Choice of Exit: You know, I really resisted matching this fic to a particular author. Because it seemed too obvious an answer - this writer and recipient were the only two who had mentioned this ‘verse, and the recipient had written for this writer last time. Also, there was the author note Holmes and Moriarty as time-travelling actors - how could I resist? This suggested to me that the writer had only recently read the novel - had decided on it after getting their assignment. So for a long time I thought the author was pocketbookangel - a lot of people don’t rule out Holmes/Moriarty but pocketbookangel is one of only three who explicitly rule it in. In their offers they mention BBC Sherlock Sherlock/Jim and they also mention being willing to write incest - in this fic Holmes and Moriarty have a quasi-incestuous relationship.

But I just couldn’t track down the fic for the writer I had originally rejected, and they’ve commented on all other possibilities. Sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one. I think the author of this fic is [personal profile] trobadora.

Candid Review of a Fine Play: This was a tricky one. Only four people mention Coules in their sign-ups - the recipient, two people who’ve left kudos on AO3, and one person who I’ve got pegged as being very busy elsewhere. So it had to be someone who hadn’t offered the ‘verse.

I’d already made myself a list of people who’d offered More Holmes ‘verses and these were the creators who sanguinity was likely to have been matched with. I was able to cross some people off by a process of elimination, then I had a look at fics for some of the creators who were left. And I think I’ve made a match on style and quality but I’ve also made a match on author replies, looking at vocabulary and regularly used phrases. So my guess is [archiveofourown.org profile] clearinghouse.

And I think that'll do for now. I might have one last go later on this evening ^_^

Well, of course I won't comment on your particular guess for it, but I'm pleased to see someone making a guess about the MDBD fic, since there's a pleasingly narrow field of authors for that one!

However, I'd like to now toss into the mix a "true if possibly misleading fact," as [personal profile] graycardinal would say...

You made a guess for "Insoluble Puzzles" based on someone who offered one half of that crossover (Mary Russell, but not Charlotte Holmes). So I do feel I ought to point out that there's one, and only one, person who offered Charlotte Holmes in this current round of Holmestice, and that person is...me.

And while I didn't put Mary Russell in my sign-up, the fact remains that I was an obsessive reader of those books as a teen.

[twirls mustache, scurries back to my own in-process guessing spreadsheet...]

Despite a very valiant effort, I’m still not quite caught up with reading everything; but it’s late in my time zone and this is the best I can do. Here are my guesses!

ELEMENTARY
• The Five Doctors – definitely [personal profile] gardnerhill
• An L.A. Story – [personal profile] phoenixfalls (an LA story by someone from LA?)
• if you come to find out who you are – maybe [personal profile] a_different_equation, who not only offered Elementary and Ritchie but also mentioned crossovers, metafiction and character study in their sign-up
• After All Is Said And Done (written for colebaltblue, who didn’t exactly request Elementary, so the writer probably matched on something else, ACD or Granada? but I’m not sure who)

MARY RUSSELL
• sewing her skin together as i sew mine (Mary Russell/Enola Holmes) – [personal profile] language_escapes (only language_escapes and angelqueen04 offered both Enola Holmes, and it’s a gift for angelqueen04!)
• The State of His Mind – (can only be angelqueen04 or graycardinal; scfrankles says graycardinal, but I don’t know his work well enough to be sure)
• Insoluble Puzzles (Charlotte Holmes/Mary Russell) – either angelqueen04 OR someone who matched on graycardinal for something else but decided to give these ‘verses a go

A STUDY IN EMERALD
• “How different, how very different, from the home life of our own dear Queen!” – perhaps [profile] pocketbookangel, as the only one to signed up with BBC and Emerald, and mention Sherlock/Jim
• A Scandal in Britannia – perhaps [personal profile] alexcat, from amongst the Emerald-offerers, who expressed a willingness to write gen?

EXIT SHERLOCK HOLMES
• Choice of Exit – [personal profile] trobadora! (the only person besides navaan to offer this ‘verse, it’s Holmes/Moriarty AND trobadora hasn’t commented on it despite a known love for Holmes/Moriarty? I made the mistake last time, and have learned my lesson: when it comes to Moriarty, if it could be trobadora, it is trobadora. ;-)

BERT COULES
• Candid Review of a Fine Play – either iwantthatcoat out of the pool of Coules-offerers (though scfrankles has quite determinedly placed them elsewhere!) or someone who matched with sanguinity based on something else

I defer to scfrankles’ expertise on Nanti Polari (Rathbone) and I have no idea about The Pomeranian Affair (Ritchie) – though I think it’s between ArmchairElvis, miss_violet_hunter and monkiainen?

Two mystery fandoms, that appeared in the works despite not being in the sign-ups! Lady Sherlock and Newman Moriarty…I want to know who wrote them!

Not going to speculate on MDBD, since it’s a small pool and I’ve already been named as a suspect. ;-)

GRANADA/ACD
• The Charm of the Season – [personal profile] scfrankles! gen, lightheartedness, compassion for minor characters – these are hallmarks of scfrankles, yes? (I was stumped looking for scfrankles among the ACD offerings, but then I remembered this sneaky “Granada/ACD” category.)
• The Midnight Caller – but here I have no idea!

That's the small fandoms; ACD/BBC post in a moment.

ACD
• The Problem of the Untold Story – [personal profile] navaan (who wrote Holmes/Moriarty last time too)
• I Am the Girl for Her – if [personal profile] sanguinity wrote an ACD fic, maybe it’s this one? that’s not so much a guess, though, as just a pondering
• The Mystery of the Human Heart – maybe [personal profile] oldshrewsburyian, who expressed a preference for gen?
• A Combination of Events – [personal profile] sanspatronymic? because surely they have to have written something ACD
• A Ride in the Park – [personal profile] tripleransom? (consensus seems to say it’s tripleransom or colebaltblue, and colebaltblue left kudos on it!)

Don’t know about the rest of the ACD entries…but everything scfrankles has said sounds solid!

BBC
• You Are as Far as Invention, and I Am as Far as Memory – [personal profile] ancientreader
• I, Spy? – perhaps [personal profile] solrosan, since it’s Anthea-centric?

And…that’s all I’ve got. Lots of the other BBC guesses made by others sound right to me, but I certainly can’t claim to have thought of them myself.

Whew! Bedtime for this very tired Holmestice-guesser.

I am either blindingly dimwitted tonight, or possibly just tired; I have just attempted to post a guessing comment as an entry to the comm -- and I don't appear to have a way to get the text back on this end.

If it is possible for the mods to move it down here where it belongs, I'd appreciate it, however silly it makes me look.

I don't often guess in these things, but I DO talk to sanguinity a bunch and make guesses in their direction, and they have insisted I post my guesses before the authors are revealed.

I am guessing that AngelQueen wrote "The State of His Mind", as others have done. I have no reason for this guess, other than it being a sheer guess and it's one of the ones I've had an opportunity to read so far.

I am guessing that armchair_elvis wrote "if you come to find out who you are". It feels like some of the stories they have written in the past; there is no real logic behind this guess, just a feeling.

Someday I hope to be as scientific as so many of you are in your guesses, but that day has not yet come!
