Guessing Post

That's a wrap for the main round of gifts! Thank you so much for another wonderful round of Holmestice! The mods want to say THANK YOU to all the creators who joined us for this round. You put in a lot of hard work and made some wonderful things.

Reveals and the Master List go up on December 21st! Until then, please enjoy and comment on all the lovely fanworks. Creators, please do NOT respond to comments on DW or post your fanwork elsewhere until reveals go up in the community. (You may of course post to our AO3 Winter 2017 Holmestice collection, which preserves your anonymity. You may reply to AO3 comments, as well.)

The main round of gifts are all posted, but we're not done yet -- we have several days of treats coming up! We'll continue to accept treats right through until reveals, so if there's a prompt out there that intrigues you and you want to whip something up for it, please do! Just send it to [email protected], using the regular submission guidelines.

If you'd like to guess at who created what in this round, a list of all the creators is below the cut. Go ahead and take a guess! It's all in good fun.

Go forth and leave love for your fellow Holmestice authors, artists, and podficcers. See you again on the 21st, when we reveal who made what!

Not sure I know anyone well enough to start guessing. But I can help others (a little)! iwantthatcoat stated on Tumblr that they made 2 gifts. Also, that they were posted by the time they received their gift (the podfic).

Aaaah! Where did the time go?! I feel like I've only just started reading! I've certainly read nowhere near enough stories to even begin guessing ...

I also had @smallhobbit down as a likely author on "The Case of the Sleeping Servants," my own gift fic. It seems to be consistent with the style and sensibilities of her other work. My experience is almost exclusively in the ACD-verse, though, so I'm a bit at sea here (especially as a novice Holmestice contributor.)

I posit the additional hypothesis that "A Ride in the Park" was written by someone else who has read and loved the Lord Peter Wimsey novels.

Why someone who has read and loved the Lord Peter Wimsey novels? (asks someone who hasn't read the novels)

The details about the horses and the ride in Rotten Row... there's a bit in Murder Must Advertise where Lord Peter needs to establish an alibi, and his friend Charles Parker of Scotland Yard suggests that he might be run away with in Rotten Row and fall off... Lord Peter says something along the lines of: "I don't mind being run away with, and only saving myself through consummate horsemanship, but I draw the line at falling off." In the end, he was seen riding with an attractive young woman connected to the royal family... ANYWAY, clearly I've spent too long semi-memorizing those books, but I thought the whole scenario seemed to echo the one in Murder Must Advertise, and might be a nod to Dorothy L. Sayers as noted Sherlockian. Probably I'm overthinking this!

The Fixed Foot reminds me of A Very Sherlock Musical by flawedamethyst on AO3. In particular, Sherlock's dismissive attitude of the dancing and singing. I haven't been able to figure out if that's a pseud for anyone who contribited here, though.

freebirdflying stated one of the BBC fics listed is their's when reposting a_different_equation's Tumblr post Holmestice Exchange Part 1: BBC Sherlock.

Okay-that's all I've got for now-I need to finish reading and then go back and try to find the fic that reminded me of one of the new authors I just read.

[personal profile] a_different_equation 2017-12-18 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

It only occured me AFTER making the rec lists that some writer might ONLY reblog and/or like the rec list they contributed too (or at best, the one they recieved). MY idea was more the following: when/if all contributors of Holmestice like and reblog ALL lists, ALL work will get more traffic. Or, at least, when BBC is reblogged (because it has ca 100 notes already), people will might look up the other entries on Ao3 or here.

But yeah... the notes on tumblr are VERY revealing. One could easily - especially when starting with ACD adaptations - at least name the contributors. Plus the discription on their tumblr (Mary Russell etc.) --- observe and deduce.

Yeah... if it had been the gift that keeps on giving (aka everyone reblogging/liking ALL FOUR LISTS), we all would never know ;)

But how does BBC SHERLOCK say: "It is what it is".

I tried not to give away anything, but we'll see, lol. I've shared every AO3 fic I've read so far to Tumblr-would've done the same with the ones posted here, but I'm mostly mobile and my mobile is a PITA to do that with. I still need to finish reading-the 21st is just around the corner! Was so glad to see the lists posted, I hope I reblogged them all.

I haven't reblogged any (yet) since I figured you'd be updating the lists with the rest of the gifts posted after you made them...? But I shouldn't assume! will you be doing that?

Fascinating! Perhaps after reveals the author will grace us with more info about their inspiration. :-)

I have been known to lie.
Or....ooops.
Take your pick ;)

Sadly, I have neglected my reading lately and will not have enough time to catch up on various styles and tells in order to make competent guesses.

I am still working my way through this amazing bounty of fics, and I'm generally a terrible guesser as far as these things go.

But... something about the writing style and formatting for the lovely "Burnt Wool and Viscum Album" makes me think it must have been written by [personal profile] brilliantlyburning, so that's my first guess for now. I may be back with more!

Okay, I've spent the better part of the day reading. I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say that [personal profile] ancientreader is responsible for the haunting "You Are as Far as Invention, and I Am as Far as Memory."

Ooh, you did the same overly zealous calculations I did :-) (42 creators, one of them not from the original sign-ups, 45 gifts means 3 pinch-hitters somewhere within those 42...)

I'm relieved you agree with me about gardnerhill and "The Five Doctors," after sanguinity has been trying to trick me into doubting myself. ;-)

About "A Ride in the Park" and horses – just totally out of my own curiosity (I haven't read the fic in question yet; haven't gotten nearly that far in reading through the entries!) but isn't colebaltblue the one famous for love of horses? Or is tripleransom also?

And graycardinal's statement is indeed very intriguing... Do you think "Police of Penzance" could be a graycardinal work? Although, graycardinal playing against type would mean *not* writing a crossover, I suppose...

[personal profile] starfishstar 2017-12-18 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, you know what, I'll second that... I wouldn't have expected ancientreader to write something gen and Mycroft-centric, but that seems to have been in response to write_out's requests specifically. And the story has an erudite quality that matches ancientreader.

*Also*, the author's enthusiasm at being matched to write_out as their recipient aligns rather neatly with ancientreader's enthusiasm at seeing write_out sign up in the first place. ;-)

...Wow, we're all awfully devious in the clues we look for, aren't we? Makes one rather nervous about what one accidentally reveals in author's notes and seemingly innocuous formatting choices!

In previous rounds, I've deliberately mismatched my formatting and copyediting choices between stories to throw off anyone trying to identify authors by their "fists," so to speak. Back then, it always seemed like wasted effort, but now that we have such scientific guessers... ;-)

Ha! Cosigning this guess. Ancientreader was my first guess as soon as I read the AN. :) The actual story feels very much like an Ancientreader story as well. I LOVE it.

I'm way behind in reading and commenting due to an unfortunate medical hiccup, but hope to catch up on more before reveals. Thanks to everyone for sharing such great stories! This is my first Holmestice and I've loved being a part of it.

I've already said this, but Ancientreader is my guess for my fantastic gift "You Are as Far as Invention, and I Am as Far as Memory." (can't link properly as I'm on my phone)

"Old Haunts" is amazing and a new favorite. I'll have to reread it, but I think you may be correct.

I thought sanguinity was being a little cruel there ^__^ I would be astounded if 'The Five Doctors' wasn't by gardnerhill.

tripleransom keeps horses in real life - she really knows her stuff. Must admit I hadn't known colebaltblue was so enthusiastic about horses until I read their sign-up this time. If I had to choose between the two writers for the fic, I would say the style matches tripleransom more closely. And there is the clincher that colebaltblue has left kudos on AO3 - as far as I know, it isn't possible to leave named kudos on your own fic, even when it's in anonymous mode.

graycardinal certainly could be a possible choice - but again, he's left kudos on AO3. And I think I've worked out who the author is now anyway... ^__^
