Guessing Post

That's a wrap for the main round of gifts! Thank you so much for another wonderful round of Holmestice! The mods want to say THANK YOU to all the creators who joined us for this round. You put in a lot of hard work and made some wonderful things.

Reveals and the Master List go up on December 21st! Until then, please enjoy and comment on all the lovely fanworks. Creators, please do NOT respond to comments on DW or post your fanwork elsewhere until reveals go up in the community. (You may of course post to our AO3 Winter 2017 Holmestice collection, which preserves your anonymity. You may reply to AO3 comments, as well.)

The main round of gifts are all posted, but we're not done yet -- we have several days of treats coming up! We'll continue to accept treats right through until reveals, so if there's a prompt out there that intrigues you and you want to whip something up for it, please do! Just send it to [email protected], using the regular submission guidelines.

If you'd like to guess at who created what in this round, a list of all the creators is below the cut. Go ahead and take a guess! It's all in good fun.

Go forth and leave love for your fellow Holmestice authors, artists, and podficcers. See you again on the 21st, when we reveal who made what!

Very scientific! I'm curious as to who you believe [personal profile] iwantthatcoat was pinch-hitting for. Also, why did you decide that your gift was the pinch-hit, not the other? Because you had a candidate for who the initial match had been?

It was unovis I was thinking of - I thought they might have been matched to me because we had Without a Clue in common.

Because you had a candidate for who the initial match had been? Well, I suppose that probably did influence my thought processes. But really what I was thinking about was that, in terms of editing and formatting, ‘Nanti Polari’ is the more polished fic.

‘Police of Penzance’ has been written by a skilled writer and a lot of effort has clearly gone into it. Presumably research has gone into it, in order to get the ending. But within the fic there are a few slips. At the beginning there’s MRS TURNER kneels at his feet. Which seems to be an unintentional slip for ‘MRS HUDSON kneels at his feet.’ There is just one phrase of American English in it: He didn't go get married again, did he? There is a missing full stop at one point. There is the formatting - em dashes and double hyphens are both used, and some of the ellipses have more than three dots. All minor things, but put together it looks like someone hurrying to meet a deadline. Doesn’t mean in itself that the fic must be a pinch-hit. But if both ‘Nanti Polari’ and ‘Police of Penzance’ have been written by the same author, then one fic must be a pinch-hit and I would assume that one to be the less polished one.

Now, now. Doyle himself mixed up Mrs Hudson and Mrs Turner and theoretically he was not in a rush and had a decent beta.

I presumed the "Mrs. Turner" reference was in fact a sly nod to the fact that the landlady of Baker Street is so named in one of the early works (I think STUD?)

It's actually SCAN. I've just checked - she's not named in STUD, then she's Mrs. Hudson in SIGN, Mrs. Turner in SCAN, and thereafter she's Mrs. Hudson again.

And I had considered this but it just doesn't work as a joke. Apart from the dramatis personae, that phrase 'MRS TURNER kneels at his feet' is the first reference to Mrs. Hudson in the fic. It throws the reader (or at least this particular reader ^_^), rather than amusing them - especially as later on Mrs. Turner is treated as a separate character to Mrs. Hudson.

I assume the other, anonymous reply to my comment is from the author, and they do seem to be admitting it was a slip because they were in a rush ^__^

It was a found slip that I decided to leave in as homage to our dear ACD's suddenly calling Mrs Hudson Mrs Turner. I debated taking it out several times because I use Mrs Turner later, but in the end decided it was mildly amusing. Apparently so mildly so that it wasn't. ;)

I do apologise - I hope you weren't too offended by my thoughts ^^" You probably weren't expecting to have a fic quite so thoroughly betaed and critiqued by one of your recipients ^^"

But at least oldshrewsburyian got the joke ^__^

Oh no, no don't apologise! Not offended at all! ( And also, I kind of knew it didn't quite work myself, but I didn't have the heart to fix it once I started thinking of it as an accidental homage.)

I am *very* honoured to have been examined so thoroughly and compared and contrasted with such outstanding writers during the matching process.

It really is a case of typewriters leaving their mark in a more modern sense. I had no idea my formatting was so distinctive. Possibly I should learn what the correct way actually is. ;)
