5. Character A is Character B's guardian angel. They're really supposed to watch and guide from afar, but, of course, over the years Character A has become a little too invested and is actually BFFs with (and totally head-over-heels for) their charge. Whoops. Come Christmas time, they're being recalled to Heaven for whatever reason and they know this is going to upset Character B big time, because they can't actually tell them where they're going and why. Your choice if you want to give them a happy ending, but if you want to go down the City of Angels route, I won't stop you...
